MG Car Club and New Car

MG Car Club and New Car

This is my first post since the onset of winter and, unsurprisingly, I have not been out on walkabouts. I have run out both Bridget the Midget and Bernie the B for single day exercises, but that is as far as it has gone. I have decided that Bridget and I will go off for a couple of months at least in the summer, but have not yet decided where. So, what have I been up too during the ‘winter blues’. There has really only been two marked events outside of the normal Christmas and birthday celebrations, the first was my resignation from the MG Car Club and the second, the purchase of a new day-car. My leaving the Car Club had nothing to do with my decision to sell my MG TF. It was my day-car for ten years, had completed over 100,000 miles and although still going strong I had been thinking about finding a replacement for some time....

Constanta

Forty-five years ago, 1977, my MG Midget was produced in Abingdon and I took my wife and children on a holiday to Constanta, Romania. I have just spent the past day and a half revisiting and walking around Constanta and it is a very different place. In the late seventies, the “Iron Curtain” countries started to open up to western tourists. The Black Sea coast has some great beaches and the great tsunami of tourists, flocking to Spanish resorts, had peaked and were eager to try new locations. Our holiday was booked for June/July period, I don’t remember the exact dates, and we had an anxious period after a seriously bad earthquake in the January that had affected a large area of the country. However, we were told it was fine to go ahead and so landed in the first Communist governed country we had been too. My memories of Constanta from then are of drab concrete block buildings, gangs of women...

Bridgets’ Swansong Update

Bridget is having new rear springs fitted along with Frontline hydraulic suspension. A few other small fixes and she should be ready. I have applied for a carnet, booked transport across the Altantic, a ship for Bridget and a plane for myself. We are going to be travelling anti-clockwise! So many of the land borders, east of Europe, are still closed or blocked by large gatherings of unfriendly troops and tanks, that I couldn't leave the plan unchanged for any longer. The start date of June will not be compromised so I am shipping Bridget to Halifax, Canada and will follow in time to collect her from the port on her arrival. The current thinking is that we will spend 4/6 weeks in Canada, then cross into the USA for a two month exploration. We might just turn up at the Pebble Beach Concourse, in August, before driving down through Central America and crossing into Colombia. Then it will be north to...

Covid Update

Well the restrictions still in place in the majority of countries vindicates my decision to postpone Bridget's Swansong until next year. However that is hardly recompense for being incarcerated in the UK.   I have had to find other things to occupy me and that has led me back into a full time occupation! I was invited to join the Executive Committee of the MG Car Club, then as if that wasn't enough I VOLUNTEERED to take on the mantle of General Manager for an undefined period!   Between you, me and the gatepost, I'm quite enjoying it. The full time staff at Kimber House are an excellent team of very experienced individuals, dedicated to the club. So my involvment is really minimal, it's just that it's minimal for five days a week!   Anyway, I am driving Bridget pretty much everyday, which is always great fun, and the club has started to roll out some events for everyone to enjoy. After almost 18 months confined to...

Africa Update

The only surviving participant from the enthusiasts wishing to take part on this adventure is Chris Vernon. Chris is a club member belonging to the South-East register. In the recent past Chris was a keen marathon runner. With nine weeks still to go before the planned departure day most things are in place for our tour. However, nobody will be surprised to hear that the definitive route is still not set in stone because of the political situation in the Middle East. Our preferred route will take us through Syria, Jordan and into Egypt but we have two possible alternatives should this not be possible. The final decision will not be made until around mid August. The proposed route is shown in full on the page headed ‘Route’ and includes all the overnight stops. Moss Europe is gathering together all the spares that we are likely to require and we will take delivery of those at the end of June. Scorpion Signs...
